Black River

The Black River is a river in southwestern Jamaica. It’s the center of environmental tourism. The Black River originates in the mountains of Manchester and flows west through the island. It extends for about thirty-three miles, and is currently holding the place as the second longest river in Jamaica. It’s the widest river in Jamaica, running about forty-five miles. In the 18th and 19th centuries, the Black River was a busy seaport for the lucrative logwood trade and exports of rum, pimento, and cattle skins from the nearby Holland, Vineyard, and Fullerswood plantations. The town of the Black River was also the first to receive electricity and automobiles due to the wealth gained from the trade of logwood.

Today though, it’s primarily known for its unique ecosystem including mangrove swamps, and a large population of crocodiles. Other wildlife around the river includes birds, crabs, and fish. Along with mangroves, the vegetation surrounding the Black River consists of sawgrass, and other wetland plants. The riverbed is lined with decomposing vegetation which gives the river a dark, almost black hue. The climate is usually hot, humid, and tropical; which is alike in all parts of Jamaica. The Black River is truly a beautiful river, and a popular place to visit.
